In the meantime, here's a post about some retail clothing that I have no desire to attempt as a seamstress. The temperatures finally dropped in our region and I was feeling kind of bad that I had to send Caroline to church in nothing but a little cardigan sweater! I was afraid she would freeze her cute cheeks off! So I immediately went out on a mission to supply my child with a winter dress coat. Here's what I found:
I believe that every little girl should have a Rothschild dress coat. They are classic, feminine and very warm (oh yeah, that's kind of important too!). Yes, they are spendy, but so worth it (if you are looking for a retailer, I think Little Colony Kids has the best online selection). The workmanship is wonderful, the fabrics are high quality and if you choose the size wisely, you can usually get two year's use from one coat. Also, if you are careful about preserving the coat, it can be passed to another child, years from now. My mother recently gave me a Rothschild coat that she had saved from my childhood and it is still in fabulous shape. It's a little big for Caroline right now, but I'm sure she'll be able to wear it next year.
The only drawback--most of the coast come with a little beret style hat which never fits Caroline. I think she must have a larger than usual head or perhaps Rothschild just makes the hats a little small. Fortunately, this is where my sewing expertise does come in handy. I plan to loosen the elastic in the back of the hat, so she can wear the entire ensemble.
This reminds me that I need to write a post about my favorite retail products that I can't make. I do design and sew most of Caroline's wardrobe, but there are some things that are either not worth my time or out of my range of expertise, like shoes and sweaters. I'll put that one on my to-do list!
